The South Daytona Lions Club in conjunction with the South Daytona Police Dept. will hold the first annual Kailynne Quartier Memorial Ride, Saturday, October 4.  Kailynne, the 13 yr. old daughter of Lt. Quartier, lost her heroic battle with brain cancer on July 16, 2007.  The funds raised from this event will be used to purchase a special digital camera to prevent childhood blindness through early screening.  The ride will begin at the SDPD at 10am.  Lunch will be served at the Piggotte Community Center at the conclusion.  $20 for each participant is

"It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" and our Annual Golf Tournament are the talk of the town!  A Great Big Thank You goes out to all our tournament sponsors, food sponsors, volunteers, those who donated gifts and prizes and the committee who worked so tirelessly to pull this all together!   There are just too many special people to list here, but more information will follow in the August edition of "The Tradewinds."  You can view pictures from both of these events at www.yes2localnews.com.

National Night Out Against Crime, August 5!  Join them in South Daytona from 7-10pm at the Police Dept. Community Relations Office in the Sunshine Park Mall, 2400 S. The Small Business Development Center at Daytona State College will offer the inaugural program FastTrac Growth Venture in the greater Daytona area in September for entrepreneurs that want to take their business to the next level.  This intensive strategic planning program will be limited to 12 company executives from non-competing industries.  For additional information and to register call (386) 506-4723.

 

The Port Orange Police Department will be hosting the new S.A.F.E. Self Defense Awareness Program for women again in September. Classes will be held twice monthly. The August 12th class has filled and the August 25th class has a few available spots. September classes are scheduled for Monday, September 8th and Monday, September 22nd, 2008 from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM. To register for either of these classes, come to the Port Orange Police Department located at 1395 Dunlawton Avenue and pay the $5.00 charge per student which is to cover the cost of the copyrighted material distributed to students. The class is available to female residents of Port Orange and is limited to 15 participants per class. This two-hour class teaches awareness, risk reductions, and physical options for participants.

Chamber members are needed to be involved in City Government.  The City of Port Orange is currently accepting applications for City Board and Commission seats.  There are openings available on the Environmental Advisory Board, the Construction Regulation Board and the General Employee Pension Committee, and there are periodic openings on other boards and committees.  Boards normally meet on a monthly basis.  For an idea of standard meeting times you can visit www.Port-Orange.org, go to the Inside City Hall tab and click on Various Boards.  City residency is required for most positions.  For an application form, call the City Clerk's office at 506-5566 and it will be faxed or emailed to you.

 

The Literacy Council's 18th Annual Golf Tournament will be held at Club de Bonmont at
